What Papyrus does

Features

Refined over thirty years in collaboration with booksellers who use it every day.

Keyboard-driven

The till runs entirely from the keyboard. About twenty short commands cover cash, card, vouchers, refunds, deposits, and account sales. No mouse needed.

Quick to learn

A new cashier can start ringing up sales after a few minutes of training. The commands are short and consistent.

Customer orders

A customer places an order, pays a deposit, and the order goes to the back office. When the book arrives and the customer returns, the deposit comes off the total.

Works offline

The till keeps selling during internet or network outages. Everything syncs when the connection comes back. You can take a till to a book fair and plug it back in afterwards.

Stock control

Every title carries its full bibliographic record — author, publisher, price, binding, ISBN. Stock on hand, cost, sales history, and open orders are all visible on one screen.

Sale-or-return

Sale-or-return stock is tracked separately from firm stock, with its own return windows, supplier claims, and accounting. It's been part of Papyrus from the beginning.

Purchasing

Papyrus shows you what sold, what's in stock, and what to reorder. It generates purchase orders per supplier from your selections. A monthly heatmap shows seasonal patterns.

Goods receiving

One operation updates stock levels, costs, pricing, and labels. Supplier claims for damaged, short-supplied, or wrong items are raised at the point of receiving.

Reporting

Over 45 built-in reports across seven categories: sales, inventory, trading, audit, stocktaking, user-designed, and ad-hoc. Everything exports to CSV, Excel, or PDF.

Cashups

Operators count their drawer without seeing what the system expects. The system compares. Three people sign off: cashier, supervisor, and a countersign to head office.

Multi-store

Bargain Books runs 87 stores on Papyrus. Stock at any branch is visible from any other. Inter-branch transfers are tracked. Central reporting runs automatically.

Audit trails

Every stock change goes through a recorded transaction. Price changes, discounts, refunds, and abandoned scans are all logged. Database integrity is checked every 24 hours.
